My dog is limping and lethargic. Is it time for a vet visit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | neutered | 4 years and 4 months old | 44 lbs

Hi, My dog(border collie) is limping with his back right leg and has become very lethargic. He is normally a very active dog who doesn’t stop running. He isn’t yelping when I touch his leg. But he isn’t putting weight on it. Should I just watch him for a day or take him to a vet

If he was behaving normally otherwise, then watching him at home would have been recommended, but since he is lethargic as well, he really should be seen. It could be anything from a strain or pull to orthopedics injury to infection. A physical exam, xrays and a screening for tick borne diseases would be recommended. Treatment will depend on the diagnosis. In the meantime, restrict activity to just leash walks for elimination and avoid excessive running, jumping or rough play until he sees the doctor.
