Why is my 13-year-old cat limping with a swollen leg and hip knot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Longhair | Male | neutered | 13 years and 5 months old | 14 lbs

When my 13 year old cat woke up yesterday he had a slight limp. When I got home from work about 9 hours later he was still limping and his front leg was swollen. The swelling was worst at the top of the leg with a large knot by the hip joint. What could be happening and what can I do to help?

It could be that Percy has injured himself leading to the limping and swelling. Limping means he is in pain, and unfortunately there are no OTC pain medications you can give him. Many human ones are toxic to cats, and are fatal if given. I would take him into a vet now for treatment. Best of luck.
