My old dog is very sick with bloody discharge. Can I use OTC meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 12 years and 9 months old | 150 lbs

The past 4-6 days Nina has experienced problems walking, she wont eat, only drinks water, has a fever, constantly sleeping, pooping (what she can) orange, uranating well walking after previously using the bathroom, and urinating in the house (isnt like her) and now she is leaking something that looks and smells like blood. I believe it to be a uti but I am no vet, and she is getting old. so I would like ur opinion. What ever it may be, is there something I can get over the counter? Thank u

I am sorry Nina is not feeling well. I would take Nina to the vet as soon as possible. All the things you have mentioned are extermely concerning. Female dogs when unspayed can get pyometra (pus filled uterus) that can be fatal. If he is drinking a lot, not walking well, and possible blood discharge this would be a concern. Typical urinary tract infections do not make dogs as sick as you are suggesting Nina in. However with an older dog it is important to have a good physical exam and possible blood work to detect why she is not feeling well. I would take her to the vet as nothing over the counter is recommended. Hope that helps
