My dog has allergies. Can I use saline to soothe her itchy eye?

Hi and thanks for posting. While sterile saline drops can be safely used in dogs, other medicated eye drops found over the counter are not and should be avoided. Also there are certain eye medications such as steroidal drops or antibiotic drops that may be recommended from your veterinarian to use for Sadie that are not available over the counter and may only be prescribed through your veterinarian. While allergy type medications are indicated, I recommend that you have your veterinarian evaluate her first to ensure that she has not scratched her corneas while scratching. Your veterinarian can prescribe medications such as prednisone or Apoquel to decrease the itchiness and perhaps eye drops depending on the exam findings. The cause of the allergy would still need to be investigated so that it can be managed. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on

It must to be hard watching Marcie be so uncomfortable and cones are the WORST!! :-) If Marcie indeed has allergies, which it sounds like she may, you may want to discuss 2 prescription only products with your veterinarian - Apoquel and Cytopoint. Both have been revolutionary in the treatment of certain types of canine allergies. It is also important to be sure the infection around her eyes is clear so a longer course of antibiotics may be necessary. Food trials can also take 4-8 weeks to know whether or not they are helpful, so stick with it! You can use the 2 products above while going through a food trial. Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. Based on your pictures, Sally could have an eye infection and there may also be trauma to the surface of the eye. I would recommend having Sally examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. If it is just a saline eye wash than you can use it to clean her eyes. If she is having problems with her eyes than it would be a good idea to have a vet examine her to determine the cause. She may need medications to treat.

I would recommend using Vetericyn Ophthalmic Pet Gel which can be found at your local PetCo to help try and relieve the eye irritation. If this does not help, I would recommend discussing other options with your veterinarian and prescription strength eye drops that contain a steroid to help relieve the eyes from irritation. There are over the counter eye drops that work well in eye allergy cases or a steroid drop from your vet. It could be due to allergies, but it could also be due to an infection or an injury to the eye. Do not use Visine or Clear Eyes on her, you may do harm. Any eye problem needs to be checked out by a vet promptly as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I'd take her into a vet today to have this diagnosed and treated. I hope this helps!
