My dog is having seizures, shaking, and losing bowel control. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Female | unspayed | 17 years and 5 months old | 8 lbs

My 8 yr old, female Chihuahua has had a few seizures lately. It's what happened at 4:30 this morning that has me worried. Harlow was crying while running around the edge of the bedroom walls which caused her to bang her head. She also lost control of her bowel movement. I was able to get her in bed with me ... she was shaking (fear?) for over an hour followed by a few small seizures. What can it be?!?? Thanks, Donna

Poor Harlow! You need to take her to the veterinarian today. Those seizures are indicative of something happening in her body. There are many potential causes of seizures and she needs bloodwork and a physical exam to begin to determine the cause and what treatment is available. Any pet who is having multiple seizures in a day needs medication to maintain the best quality of life. I hope she starts feeling better quickly!
