My dog coughed when I picked her up quickly. Should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 10 years and 3 months old | 4 lbs

Could picking her up too fast cause her to cough? I was just trying to get her away from something so I lifted her up the air like the attached picture but with 1 hand. Then I put her down & she let out a few coughs. Maybe I applied too much pressure? Or caught her off gaurd? Other than that she’s good & is running around playing now within minutes of it happening

Yes sometimes upward pressure on the chest or neck can elicit a cough, especially if unexpected. If she is acting normal continued monitoring should be fine. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
