Pet's info: Dog | Cairn Terrier | Male | neutered | 5 years and 5 months old | 12 lbs
My dog ate an extremely big piece of raw meat this morning by accident. When I realized he ate it,he had already swallowed. He's a small/median 12 pound terrier mixed dog. He seemed to have been struggling swallowing it all and I thought he was choking until he started walking away from me. Hes currently sitting down and makes a few whining sounds. Is he going to be okay??

The biggest problem with a bigger piece of something swallowed is that it could remain stuck in the esophagus which can be dangerous. Typically signs of this are excessive swallowing/gagging, drooling, acting restless, decreased appetite, etc. If it was fully swallowed then it may or may not upset his stomach (decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy). If you become concerned that it may not have been fully swallowed or if he is acting off then a visit to your family vet is in order. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
