My cat is drinking a lot of water. Is this a sign of illness?

Should I be worried that my cat is drinking nearly an entire bowl of water in a day ?? He's been sick and the vet at the welfare gave antibiotics and said he'd be fine, and that everything else was normal besides the bacterial infection. I change his water in the morning and by the evening the bowl is almost empty again. Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 7 years and 5 months old

I recommend letting his veterinarian know of this change in behavior. He will likely need blood work and urine samples tested. Diabetes, kidney disease and thyroid disorders can all affect thirst.
