My dog is crying in pain and hunched; could it be prednisone?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | neutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 15 lbs

Yesterday, I heard jack crying (like the kind of cry like your finger is caught in the door or you’re in acute pain). I ran out to find him and he was hunched over a little and drawing up his lip crying. I sat down with him and rubbed his face and he stopped. Assumed a cramp, or he bit his lip or something random. Just now (11:30 pm) he woke me up doing it. Now he acts fine, ate and drank some. Wants to go back to bed. He recently started prednisone, 5 mg 2x daily & a novel protein diet.

It does sound like some kind of painful reaction. If he is otherwise normal now, I would just continue to monitor him. If it continues, have Jack re-examined by your vet to see if there is a medical cause for the sudden yelping. Side effects of prednisone can include anxiety or restlessness, and I wonder if that could be contributing to the new behavior.
