How to treat cat stomatitis without expensive dental surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 7 years old | 5 lbs

10 out of my 17 rescue & foster cats have varying symptoms of stomatitis, 2 can barely eat liquids, 1 of those did lose a tooth. Thanks to Catego, we are flea-free, so EGC flare-ups seem minimal. I puree & strain hi-protein canned cat food w coconut oil & juice, B vitamins, L-Lysine, & tuna, chicken, or raw fish. Symptoms lessen & worsen no matter what. FeLV/FIV negative. What is the best treatment besides dental work/complete tooth extraction that I can't afford for 10+ cats??

Dental work really is the most successful treatment but if they are virus negative then steroid treatment may provide significant relief during severe flare ups and helps promote appetite. Interferon treatment can help for many cases, especially if viruses such as calicivirus are circulating
