My dog has IBS. Is grain-free Rayne food safe for his heart?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | neutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 15 lbs

Jack has IBS and we’re doing a vet prescribed novel protein diet (Rayne kangaroo maintenance) & prednisone to see if symptoms clear. I’m concerned with him being on grain free food and what I’ve read about cardiomyopathy. He once had a grain free food and got pancreatitis. EKG showed Ejection fraction and fractional shortening are normal but Interventricular septum & left ventricular posterior wall are slightly enlarged. Could just be his normal. Should I be concerned with the Rayne food?

The role of grain free diets in heart disease is still very poorly understood but is most likely due to a chronic dietary deficiency (such as taurine). A short (6-8week) novel diet trial to investigate if food sensitivities are triggering the IBS should not cause any long term issues and it may be possible to source a suitable (non-flavoured etc) taurine supplement as a precaution, especially if fed for longer. There are alternative ranges such as royal canin anallergenic or hills z/d which are hydrolysed rather than novel protein if you are very concerned
