My puppy's licking her bottom, something's hanging out. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 28 days old | 14.8 lbs

My dog has been licking her bottom nonstop since yesterday, now she has something hanging out of it. Is this an emergency or something I really need to worry about or just keep her from licking it and it will heal? She’s a 3 month old schnauzer/ Dalmatian

It looks like Quail may be having an anal sac problem. See the link below for more information: https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951501 I recommend you make an appointment to have Quail seen by a vet in case there is an anal sac infection, as they can be very painful, and I do not recommend that you try emptying Quail's anal sacs yourself for that reason. Your vet may recommend antibiotics, pain medication, or other treatment, as sometimes allergies, parasites, autoimmune disorders, or a mass/ growth in the area can also cause this appearance to the tissue. In the meantime I recommend that you keep an e-collar (cone) on Quail to help reduce the risk of her licking the area and causing further trauma.
