My rabbit has a bleeding bald spot from brushing. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 1.874 lbs

I was brushing Marshmallow and did not realise that I’ve been pulling out his fur as he was shedding really badly. Now there’s a bald spot on his bum and it’s bleeding, but seems to be a superficial wound. I’ve cleaned it with warm water and applied diluted Betadine. May I know if there’s anything else that should be done? I’m not sure if a bandage is required as I believe it’ll most likely result in him ripping it out.

Hello. Your picture seems to show an abscess. Is Marshmallow in with another rabbit, or exposed to another pet that could have bitten him? It is very difficult to bandage the back end of a pet, much less a rabbit, so continue to use your antiseptic until healed. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
