Why is my dog wobbly and high after buprenorphine for her limp?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 11 years and 9 months old | 11.5 lbs

Hi trix woke up with a limp, left rear leg. Took her to my vets urgent care& vet didn’t feel xrays were necessary b/c he felt her legs, rear &back and she didn’t react as if something was broken. gave her a shot of buprenorphine & said it may make her sleep. It’s been 3 hrs &she seems very high still &unstable on her feet, which makes it seem like the limp is even worse. Is this a normal reaction for this drug?also trix has just started Leukeran & prednisolone for a small cell lymphoma diagnosis

Hello, and thanks for your question. Without examining Trixie I can’t say for sure if there might be another problem causing her unsteadiness, but buprenorphine can definitely cause sedation and unsteadiness. If it’s from the buprenorphine, the symptoms should resolve within about 6 hours. Hope this helps!
