Dog vomiting and diarrhea after mice exposure. Should I go to ER?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Long Coat) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 6 lbs

My 19mo Chihuahua MN, Villain, & I live in an apt. that's recently been infested with mice. The mice are most active in the kitchen so I gated Villain out of there for the last 3wks. I leave for a trip tomorrow. Yesterday he had diarrhea & I called his vet to see if they thought it was an infection contracted from the mice. They said unless he was vomiting it was probably stress from me packing. This morning he vomited three times and my vet is not open - should I take him to the ER? Thanks

Oh my. Poor guy. Rats can carry a lot of diseases, and his symptoms are suggestive of a possible infection. I would absolutely consider taking him to a vet today. If the only option is the ER vet then that is a good option at this point. It seems his symptoms have progressed and he should be evaluated and treated as quickly as possible. I hope that your pet Villain gets well soon! Best wishes and take care.
