Is Frontline safe for Australian Shepherd puppies with sensitivities?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 8 days old | 12 lbs

We have an Australian Shepherd puppy 10 weeks old, his weight is 12 pounds. Our vet found that he has lice and prescribed an antibiotic (CEFPODOXIME) 25mg, prednisone 2.5 mg, medicated shampoo phytovet CK, and Frontline 5-22lbs. I have read about Australian Shepherds having reactions to certain pesticides but cannot find any information about Fipronil causing any issues. We have not treated him with Frontline yet. Do you have any information about using Frontline with Australian Shepherds?

Hi there. The concern with Australian Shepherds is that many dogs of this breed may carry the MDR1 gene mutation, which makes them especially sensitive to certain medications. Frontline (active ingredient fipronil) is NOT a drug that would be expected to cause any problems in these dogs, so in general it is fine to use in Aussies.
