Can a wet towel on a heater cause fire or increase room humidity?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Cockatiel | Male | 8 months and 12 days old

I want to increase humidity in my room and i saw online i can put a wet towel on the heating source. I tought i could put it when i go to sleep since it will be the easiest method. The other night i did it and after like an hour i touched the towel and it was hot. I wanted to ask can the towel catch fire on the furnace, even if it is wet? And does that method with the wet towel even work?

Thanks for reaching out about Keke. This is a bad idea as once the towel dried it can catch fire. Cockatiels are normally from arid areas and don't require high humidity. If using it as a treatment, 10-15 minute periods in the steamy shower could help. Good luck.
