What's the best way to safely switch my dog's food brand or flavor?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I'm wondering what is safe when it comes to switching dog food brands or even switching flavours within the same brand

Hi there. In general, if you're making a change, it's best to gradually start mixing in the new food over the course of at least 2-3 days rather than switching all at once - this helps to avoid GI upset related to a sudden diet change. As long as you do this, it's fine to switch to a different flavor or brand if you want to.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is ok to change Joey's food! Just do so gradually: 1/4 new to 3/4 old for 3-5 days, then 1/2 and 1/2 for 3-5 days, then 3/4 new and 1/4 old for 3-5 days. If vomiting or diarrhea starts at any time go back to previous mixture for a longer period of time. I do recommend trying to stay with one good long term though! I hope this helps!
