How to prevent recurring bald spots and sores on my horse's face?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Farm Animal | Horse | Female | unspayed | 5 years and 10 months old | 700 lbs

My mare has had some sort of skin irritations on her face on and off for about 3 months. Small pennie-sized bald spots appeared with puss and a little blood all over her face. After a few days they would heal and hair eventually grew back. Gradually they have become less and less. Today for example there are two healing spots and one new sore one. Any ideas what this could be caused by or what I can do to prevent it? Thank you.

Hello. It is possible that your mare is highly sensitive to fly bites, & reacts by developing these sores. I would be very diligent with your fly control & consider using a fly mask to protect the face. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
