Can my 8-month-old puppy eat adult dog food if he won't eat puppy food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | unneutered | 8 months old | 11 lbs

Milo is a mini dachshund and 8 months old tomorrow. We have Purina puppy chow he barely touches but this regular sized dachshund has Purina adult dog food that milo goes nuts over. Would it be OK to start letting milo eat adult Purina dog food? I don't know what else to do to get him to eat what he is supposed to be eating.

Yes that is perfectly ok. They are both balanced dog foods. Just check the bag to see how many calories per cup so you can adjust as needed (meaning if more calories in the puppy food you will have to feed a little more adult food or vice versa). I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
