My pregnant cat has trouble breathing. Is it normal before birth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 23 days old | 10 lbs

My cat, Sassy, is pregnant and about 1 week from giving birth. She seems to be coughing or having a hard time breathing when her belly is touched. Should I take her to the vet?

I recommend to take her to the vet. It is not normal to see a hard time breathing due to pregnancy. There can be many different reasons for this including fluid overload from the pregnancy or the beginning of an infection. Best to play it safe. Try to record a video of the abnormal breathing as this may help the doctor in their diagnosis. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
