Cat had antibiotics for breathing, still not eating. Is she okay?

Today I gave visit to my vet she gave my cat two injections she was breathing heavily and not eating but after two injections which were antibiotics she is roaming and meowing not yet eaten for herself but she is feeding her kittens first is she going to be ok am concerned

Hi, Maybe you could try to offer her some more nutrient and palatable food such as Hill’s recovery tins. Will she need an antibiotic course ? If you don’t have access to that particular food, you can try small amount of palatable food such a tuna in water, sardines.

How old in she? If the infection is cleared and she has no appetite and is losing weight, then she likely will need bloodwork or an xray/ultrasound to see what else is going on. It seems she is getting weak from lack of nutrients since she falls over and I would worry about her getting dehydrated. There is nothing you can do at home except try to encourage her to eat. You can try canned tuna, baby food, or variety of dry and canned food flavors to see if it will entice her.

I recommend finishing out his liquid antibiotic via oral syringe if you haven’t already. If he is still eating his dry food, then I wouldn’t worry too much about him avoiding canned food for now. You can try putting a very small amount of canned food in his mouth every few days after to show him that the food no longer has a medicinal taste. With patience and time he may start eating canned food on his own again. If he is not eating at all ( including dry food), then I recommend bringing him in to see your veterinarian as complete inappetance for more than 2 days in cats can lead to a very serious condition called hepatic lipidosis. If he is not eating at all, your vet may do additional diagnostics and/or recommend anti-nausea medications and/or appetite stimulants. Good luck!

Yesterday i took my 18yr old cat to the vet for a lump in her forehead, nose and eye drainage. Turned out to be an abscess. She did have a slight fever. The vet drained it and filled with antibiotics plus gave her a shot of antibiotics and eye drops
Poor Clementine, it is a lot to go through at her age, however I am confident she can get better. I would not worry about the ointment if the abscess has already scabbed over. You can try cleaning the pus away gently with some cotton wool and lukewarm water, if she allows you to do so. As her sense of smell is probably affected, you need to offer her food that smells quite strong such as tuna in water, or boiled cod, or Hill’s recovery wet food. In particular, this last food is in a pate form, and it can be made a bit more watery by adding some water to aid water intake. You could warm it up slightly in the microwave, and offer it afterwards. Always start small with portions, and if eating increase the portion and offer again in 2 hours. If she is still not eating by this afternoon best to have her checked over as she could benefit from being rehydrated and have her temperature rechecked as it could still be up a bit. Hope she makes some progress soon.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Since you are in day 1 of the antibiotics I think it would be fair to give it a bit more time to see if Musika gets better. You can try to entice his appetite with things like tuna, tuna water and chicken. If his appetite does not improve by tomorrow, let your veterinarian know as anorexia can be detrimental to a cat's health. Good luck and have a great day!

An upper respiratory infection often involves nasal discharge or swelling of the mucous membranes which can then disable the sense of smell and then cats do not want to eat. One way of helping that is to 1) remove any discharge from the nose as often as possible with a moist tissue. 2) feed her fishy canned food, preferably pate style, and warm it up in the microwave. This will intensify the aroma of the food. Clavamox tastes not so good, and sometimes it can also make a cat not hungry. However, it is absolutely necessary that your kitty eats at least a little bit every day in order not to get a serious liver disease. Try to hand feed her, if she will not eat from the bowl. If she does not eat at all she will need to be seen by your vet for a recheck.

Poor girl. I am unsurewhat her undelrying disorder is; however her very best option here is to be hospitalized and given nutrients and her medicaitons by injection. Also Amoxicillin oral should always given with food, because giving this on an empty stomach (the milk is helpful but not enough) will lead to further lack of appetite and upset stomach. Which is why giving her medicaitons as an injectable is ideal for a cat that is refusing to eat. As an alternative you can also see if the vet will give her a vitamin injection and subcutaneous fluids to help boost her energy. The vet can also prescribe an appetite stimulant to help entice her to eat. And as an alternative to givign her Amoxicillin in an empty stomach, your vet can give her an injectable antibiotic called Convenia, which will work for 2 weeks after just 1 injection. Force feeding her slightly warmed cans of baby food or a liquid pet diet such as Recovery liquid using a syringe or small turkey vaster is also helpful. I h

Hi and welcome to Boop by Petco! There are many reasons why Ariel could stop eating, one of which could be the antibiotic (Augmentin). The reason she is on Augmentin could be another reason why she has stopped eating. Augmentin does have a potential to be rough on the GI system, it can cause animals to have GI signs, ie vomiting, diarrhea and not wanting to eat. Often times if it is given with a meal these signs are avoided; however, just like in humans every animal responds differently to medication. Ariel may just be sensitive to Augmentin. I would recommend offering boiled, skinless chicken breast; even chicken or turkey baby food to encourage her to eat-try warming the food up as that often encourages them to eat as well. I would also speak with your veterinarian about her medication as she does need to be on a medication for the underlying condition-it just may need to be a different one. I’m so sorry to hear that this is going on with your cat. If the other symptoms have begun to resolve and the anorexia is the only problem then yes, it could be from the antibiotics. If however the initial symptoms have not resolved and now your cat is not eating it is probably due to a progression of the disease. If this is the case, then I would recommend taking your cat back in to have a recheck. He may need additional medications and treatments or he may be at the end stages of his disease. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Just like you pointed out, it is possible that this is all related to the trip. I would recommend to just continue with the current plan for now. If it is just related to the trip, she should start feeling better soon. If her appetite has not improved by tomorrow, let your veterinarian know as the other possibility would be that the antibiotics are causing her to lose her appetite which is a common side effect seen with some antibiotics. Unfortunately, cats really need to be able to smell their food to have an appetite. That can be very challenging with a cat that has a respiratory disease. You are doing the right thing by warming up the food. I will also sometimes add the water from canned tuna or get fishy smelling cat food to help with that problem. I see that you posted this question 8 hours ago, so I hope you have been able to get Josephine to eat something. If not, another trick that will sometimes help is to close the bathroom door and run the shower to get the room very steamy, then allow her to sit in there for 5-10 minutes. Sometime that can help with congestion. If her breathing does not seem to be improving after the injections and she is still not eating, I would recommend contacting your veterinarian for help.
