How to care for newborn feral kittens to ensure their survival?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 8 lbs

I keep hearing from rescues and people that take care of cats that it's really common for kittens to die. A skittish feral cat Cupcake gave birth to 5 babies in my garage in a box. They are about a week old and they weigh between 5.6-6.3 oz. I've been weighing them daily. How do I make sure they don't die? I want to take as much care of them as I can

Hi, a lot of kittens die because of catching viruses so as much as you protect them and make sure they are ok, if there are unvaccinated cats roaming and mum is also not vaccinated, the risk is high. Hope these kittens do well and that they can find a loving home in the future, you could try to contact a charity organisation that might help with spaying the queen afterwards and taking carol the kittens. See https://www.alleycat.org/category/our-work/ for example.
