My dog has cancer and is suffering. When is it time to say goodbye?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered

My dog has cancer and he can barely walk. He’s old and can barely make a bowel movement. He just lies there and is lethargic. He isn’t himself really he doesn’t eat his own food but eats handouts. I do t know when I should put him down. He does have tender areas and his leg is swollen. When is the right time

Hi, the right time is when quality of life is poor. I would recommend to have him checked over and discuss this with your vet, but I think deep down inside you know that Spanky is not enjoying his life anymore. Sending you lots of sympathy.
