Why are my nursing cat's nipples swollen and kittens seem small?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed

My mother cat had kittens a week ago, and a couple of her nipples seem swollen and the others are light pink and not swollen. The kittens are smaller than our other cat's litter (one day apart). Is there a reason for this?

It could be those nipples are used more often than the others, leading to the different appearance. The size of the kittens could be due to genetics, or it could be these kittens are not getting enough milk. You can have them all checked out by a vet to make sure everything is ok. I hope this helps!
