Why does my kitten gurgle when breathing after formula feeding?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed

I have a kitten that is a little over 1 week old. I made an appointment with the vet but will not be seen til Monday. Today is Friday. I noticed today that while I syringe fed her she would maintain suction for a few seconds and was very fussy during the feeding. I know she is hungry because she keeps suckling on my hand or fingers. What is most worrisome is that when she drinks some formula, I hear a gurgling noise when she breathes and sneezes. These stop a few minutes after I pause feeding.

This would make me concerned about potential aspiration, but it's possible that the gurgling is from upper respiratory congestion. If Ambi is having difficulty breathing, or if she still is not eating well I think you should see a vet tonight even though you have an appointment to be seen tomorrow - these can be serious signs in such a young kitten. If she has been eating well this weekend and gaining weight and seems to breathe normally it is probably okay to wait until your visit tomorrow.
