My dog has gas, diarrhea, and vomit. Should I fast both dogs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 2 years and 1 month old | 74 lbs

Between my two dogs I gave them about a 1/4 can of chicken savor pro plan canned food, this was a special treat. It did not sit well for Otis because he now has horrendous gas and diarrhea, he did vomit once. He has had diarrhea maybe a little under 24 hours. I've been giving him pumpkin, and firm up as well as lots of water. I have been feeding his normal food Pro Plan Sensitive stomach salmon, but should I fast him for 12 to 24 hours? If I fast him can I fast my other dog as well?

Hello. It never hurts to do a small fast to help settle the stomach. 12 hours should be fine & then re-introduce food slowly, maybe 1/3 of the ration followed several hours later by another 1/3 & remainder in the evening. It might be easier to fast both dogs overnight, that way no one feels left out. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
