Hello,Last night my dog ingested 8 pills of mesulid 100mg. I’m not sure if he ingested them by himself because we have 3 dogs. He seems normal... How long should I monitor him for side effects?

Hello. Mesulid was banned in the United States due to very sever side effects in people & children, so there is actually very little information available in our veterinary formularies. Based on this, I would strongly encourage you to have all 3 dogs seen by your veterinarian for base line blood work, especially looking at liver values. This may have to be monitored for several days, but if you wait to see if any of your dogs gets sick, it may be too late to provide treatment. I hope you can have them seen soon & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Oh no. That was naughty. Unfortunately this medication Mesulid is not tested in pets, but b/c it is an NSAID, I would highly recommend taking Smoke in to your vet for immediate evaluation. NSAID toxicity can take up to 48 hrs to manifest, and this is a big dosage, even if it was spread out amongst all 3 dogs. Symptoms of NSAID toxicity include excessive vomiting +/- blood, diarrhea +/- blood, lethargy and lack of appetite. The vet likely will recommend bloodwork to evaluate the liver enzymes and then prescribe medication to help protect his GI tract as well as reduce further reabsorption of the drug. I hope that your pets turn out ok moving forward. Best wishes and take care!
