My senior cat has an ear growth. What are surgery risks and recovery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Havana Brown | Male | neutered | 12 years and 4 months old | 9.25 lbs

My cat Teddy has either a polyp or cancer in his ear. He had an inner ear infection with a nasty bug, treated it with antibiotics. He's got horner's syndrome. Eye is still not normal. He's 12ish with previous health issues. Since the diagnosis would cost so much extra, vet suggested doing surgery to remove growth with biopsy after the fact. What if it is cancer? What are the risks? What are the chances of recovery? What should I be aware of? Thanks!

In a senior cat, there is always a chance any lump could be cancer unfortunately. If it is cancer, the vet will likely want to do further tests to see if it's spread. There may be chance this is just a polyp, and removing it is curative. You need to be aware that any surgery carries risks due to anesthesia, but the vet wouldn't recommend the surgery if they didn't feel it was safe for him. I do recommend having the surgery done. I hope this helps!
