My dog is in pain and hunched after an accident. Does he need x-rays?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 4 years and 6 months old | 20 lbs

I have a male 20-lb terrier mix who is crazy for ball-time. I was doing yard work and throwing the ball for him when he brought it to me. He lost the ball down a hole and was fussing so I went to help him but he’d already recovered it. I don’t know if he was tweaked or stuck getting back out of the hole - orif he landed wrong or ran into a rock or what, but when it was time to go inside & wash him off he was creeping along, hunched up in pain. He cries when picked up. Does he need xrays?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Cameron. I do recommend that he sees a veterinarian. He may require x-rays if he appears to be have bone or joint pain. He could also have a muscle strain. This will not show up on x-rays. This is typically treated with rest and anti-inflammatory pain medications. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps you!
