Could my adopted dog's diarrhea & lethargy be from travel stress?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 30 lbs

Hello, we adopted our dog about three weeks ago. For the first two weeks she was energetic and eliminating outside of the house. After a long trip this past weekend she has been lethargic and experiencing diarrhea. Could this be just stress from travel? It's been happening for about three days.

This could be just from the stress of travel but since it has been going on for 3 days it is probably time to have her checked out. Other causes of diarrhea include intestinal parasites, viruses, GI blockages, and many metabolic diseases. An examination by your vet should help determine the cause. Roux may need a bland diet and some antibiotics and/or probiotics to help her gut get back into balance. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
