My foster bulldog has a scabbed head, hair loss. Does she need vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi I’m fostering an English bulldog that I just picked up last Friday. I noticed a scabbed area on the top of her head when I picked her up and just yesterday the hair starting falling out. The coordinator at the rescue organization told me to treat the area with neosporin and that it was just a staph infection. She told me that taking her to the vet isn’t necessary, but I’m afraid to let it go without a professional opinion.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would disagree with that treatment plan. While it may be a staph infection, it is severe enough that it will require further investigation to check the type of infection and further local treatment with clipping and cleaning and oral antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. If there is scratching or licking involved, there are medications that could help with that and an e-collar could also be beneficial to prevent further self-trauma if that is the case. I recommend visiting a veterinarian for further asssessmenr and treatment. Best of luck!
