My Yorkie died suddenly. Was it collapsed trachea or something else?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 7 years and 7 months old | 10 lbs

Our seven and a half year old yorkie passed away three days ago. She was fine up until 11pm. She starting coughing “honking” that got progressively worse through the night. We tried to calm her down but she was struggling to breath, honking and restless. She was on our bed the entire time. She wanted off the bed at 7am. As I set her down, she fell to her side, had a little convulsion and passed away. We now know she had a collapsed trachea. I feel I failed her.

I hate to hear about Bella’s passing. It is so hard to lose our fur babies. If you want to know the cause, there may be an option to have a necropsy (autopsy) preformed. It’s possible it was related to the collapsing trachea but heart conditions, fluid in the lungs as well as other causes can also present suddenly. Unfortunately you cannot change the past and can only examine the situation and learn from it. Treasure her memory and try to focus on the happy moments.
