How long does it take for a dog to walk after spinal inflammation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 15 years old | 62 lbs

How long should it take for my dog to start walking again after spinal cord inflammation? Her spine is otherwise not injured. We use a harness to lift her up since the problem leg with this issue is her hind left. Her hind right leg is also broken. She can take about 10 little steps or few big steps. She is also able to squat down to use the bathroom which she wasn’t able to do before. She has been on steroids for the spine for almost 2 weeks. Is this improvement too slow?

This question is tough to answer because every spinal cord injury is different and all dogs heal at different rates. I would recommend judging Rayna’s improvement on a day by day basis. If she is improving, even slowly, it is a good sign. Continue supporting her and giving the medication as prescribed and she will most likely continue to improve. Some dogs don’t show any improvement until 6 weeks post injury. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
