I’d recommend holding a treat in front of Oscar to coax him onto the treadmill first and then have him spend a little time on it to get comfortable. From there you can have it move very slowly and keep holding his favorite treat out front to keep him moving forward. You can gradually increase the speed.

Treadmills can be scary for puppies at first! I would start by simply rewarding him with lots of treats for getting on the treadmill while it isn't moving. Once he's comfortable standing on it, you can try the same thing with it moving at a very slow speed - rewarding constantly for staying on the treadmill and walking. You can gradually increase the speed as long as he's comfortable. You do need to be very careful about too much exercise with young puppies like this, as their bones and joints are still developing - I would only use a treadmill for exercise if you are consulting Tyson's vet regularly about how much you are using it and at what speed.

Dogs can be trained to walk on a treadmill, but always have to be under supervision on the treadmill. Usually, I will train them to walk on the treadmill using peanut butter for them to lick (from a Kong or plastic cup) to keep them in the same place while walking on the treadmill. Start with having her walk for only short periods of time initially (1-2 minutes) to get her used to the treadmill, then slowly increase her time up to her normal walk length. Hello, good questions. Just like in people, dogs are healthier and on average will live longer, healthier lives if they are kept active, lean, and fit. No one can predict if a dog will get liver/kidney/heart disease down the road, but keeping them active is an important component to helping them stay healthy in general. Getting dogs out for walks is also important to their mental stimulation, as it allows them to see, smell, and hear a variety of things. Some people do successfully exercise their dogs on a treadmill, but there are absolutely dangers to this, and doing so requires careful training. A typical dog's first response to being on a treadmill will be to run away (it's scary when the ground moves from under you!), and they can get hurt in the process. HI Adeel! Roxy is so super cute! You can start doing some training on a treadmill now, but you will have to get her used to it. I would put a link below on a website on how to do it. The amount of time she is allowed to exercise is five minutes for every month of age, so at three months she should exercise no more than 15 minutes twice a day. There may be some variation here depending on who you ask, but a board certified trainer informed me that puppies are still growing so they shouldn’t over do it when it comes to high impact sports and activities, and should only run for roughly 20 mins twice daily. Once she is done growing (around 1.5 years of age), Roxy should be able to exercise roughly 30-45 mins twice daiy max. Also pay attention to your pets signs (excessive panting, slowing down, labored breathing, etc) and know when she has had enough. I hope this helps! Take care of that fur baby.

This is a great question. Thanks for being proactive. You can get Penelope in shape the same way you or I would. If she's doing nothing now, start with 2-3 walks a day of 5-10 minutes and build up to 30-60 minutes over a few weeks to months. Go slower if she's overweight or has a short nose, and faster if she's very healthy, has a normal length nose, enjoys the walks, and is a normal weight. After she can walk for 30-60 minutes 1-3 times a day, add in 5 minutes of jogging throughout the walk. If you're walking/jogging every single day, you should be able to scale up at a rate of about 5 more minutes every 3-7 days. If you're only jogging weekly or every few days, scale up every other week. Using this routine, you'll be able to slowly build up her endurance. Most dogs can and enjoy running several miles at a time and some enjoy much more. Congratulations on your new dog Hazel. New situations can be very stressful and it sounds like she may have not had a lot of training or exposure in her previous home. Find treats that she really seems to like. You may need to experiment around with different ones. Once you find the treats, reward her for approaching you with a treat. Reward her for sitting next to you or any other healthy activity that involves her being interested in you. This will quickly form a positive association. You will not always need to reward this behavior but for right now, it’s important. To train her to use a leash, hook it to her collar and allow her to drag it around. She will eventually move and get use to the weight. Then start to pick up the leash and slowly follow her as well as encourage her to walk with you. Hi. My puppy isn't coming out for a walk. Since last few days I've to drag him out of the house. Even food treats aren't working on him now. Whenever I set the leash lose, he just runs back to the house.
Poor Tyson! It sounds like he's very anxious about walks for some reason. Without more information, it's hard to say if he is afraid of the leash, or being outdoors in general. Other than taking him outside to potty, I would stop trying to take him on any walks right now - dragging him outside and forcing him to go is probably making the problem worse, unfortunately. Instead, start wherever he is comfortable and use very tasty food treats - things like chicken, roast beef, hot dog slices, or cheese often work well for anxious dogs. For example, you might sit on the doorstep with him at first and just feed him a handful of treats, one at a time. Do this a few times a day, until he seems comfortable and happy about sitting on the doorstep. At that point, you can try taking a step or two into the yard or driveway - sit down there and feed him treats again.
