What causes guinea pig skin scratches and patchy fur on its side?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Male | unneutered

I’ve noticed my guinea pig has a scratch that appears to be in patches on his left side, and I am concerned about what it could be.

Hi, and thanks for your question. This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or fungal or mites). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics or antifungal meds (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can be possibly started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths (pay extra care when you do it as the eye is very close).
