Is it safe for my cat to eat human foods like potatoes, beans, peas?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 9 years and 1 month old | 13.06 lbs

What fruits, vegetables, legumes, and grains can cats eat without any adverse effects? My cats like nibbling on potatoes, beans, and peas but I want to make sure it is safe for them to eat. Also, can I supplement my recovering cat’s diet with kitten milk replacement formula? His appetite is improving but I want to make sure he meets his daily nutritional requirements. Also, in a lot of hairball products, I see petrolatum jelly as an active ingredient. Can I feed my cat petroleum jelly instead?

I recommend keeping table foods to 10% or less of the diet. All the foods you listed are not toxic and could be offered: onion, garlic, and fatty foods would be the main ones to avoid. I don’t think supplementing with KMR would be necessary for your other cat - you would be better off offering canned cat food mixed with water as it is nutritionally complete for an adult. While petroleum jelly would be okay you may have difficulty getting your cats to eat it.
