My Black Mouth Cur puppy is extremely hyper. What are my options?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Black Mouth Cur | Female | spayed | 7 months and 12 days old

My 8 month old Black Mouth Cur is extremely hyperactive. I'm not talking about regular puppy behavior. I'm talking about complete loss of control. Im considering taking her to the vet for medication to help calm her. Currently, I'm using Quiet Moments OTC calming agent. It works fairly well, but I dont know if she should be taking it every day? What do you suggest? I really want to keep this puppy but I'm thinking she highly untrainable in her current state.

Black mouth Curs are a working dog, they are also extremely intelligent and highly athletic. This combination can be difficult to handle. For any active puppy, daily vigorous exercise is needed. Some dogs may need as much as a one hour or longer. Training is also essential. Work on things like heel and other obedience work. You may also look into agility, search and rescue or any of the jobs that dogs currently do. This will help to give her a sense of purpose. Keep in mind that this is temporary and she will eventually outgrow it but she will likely remain a very active adult dog. Calming medications may not be the answer for her. They can help at times but they will not alter her personality. If getting her exercised every day is not possible for you, you may look into having a dog walker come by every day or doggy daycare. Training these dogs to jog beside a bike can also be easier on the human and still result in a good activity for the dog. A hard game of fetch can also help. I hope this helps and best of luck.
