Why is my dog's belly red and lumpy? Could it be a growing tumor?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 60 lbs

My dog has a blister like lesion on his abdomen that has grown in size and become erythematous (may be due to him licking the area though.) The lesion first began as 3-4 mm lesion 3-4 weeks prior and has grown to the size it is in the picture.

From the photo, that looks almost like a mass. I recommend to have it examined by the veterinarian as red, hairless masses are concerning for a skin cancer called a Mast Cell Tumor. The doctor will palpate the lesion and will likely recommend to aspirate the cells if they suspect a mass. Gambit should also wear an elizabethan collar to prevent him from licking the area as this can make it worse. It’s best to play it safe and have it checked out. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I recommend to have Kai examined by his veterinarian. Skin masses can be many things but red raised masses are especially concerning for a skin cancer called a Mast Cell tumor. Your veterinarian will need to collect a sample of cell to examined under the microscope to determine what this is and if further treatment is needed. Have this checked out soon.
