Should I clip my untamed bird's wings for easier training?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Cockatiel | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 22 days old

Should I clip his wings? He's not completely tamed, although he will eat millet from my hand and will sometimes step on my fingers. I haven't taken him out of the cage yet in fear of him flying around and not being able to put him back inside afterwards thus far, so I've been thinking of clipping his wings in order to make his taming easier with more space to work with outside the cage. Would clipping them help, or worsen the situation?

I think clipping the wings would be a great idea. That way you can get Nero our more and feel comfortable that he won’t fly away. Once clipped the wings will grow back so if you decide later you want him to be flighted, he will be able to.
