Great Danes were traditionally guard dogs but those days are long gone. Now they are family dogs. The main health conditions are related to their extremely large size. They are prone to growth abnormalities if they are not fed the right food. They take longer to mature than GSD and they need a giant breed puppy food until at least 15 months of age. Similiar to GSD, gastric dilation (bloat), arthritis and cancer are concerns for the breed. They can also have some eye abnormalities. Typical life expectancy is 8-10 years. Make sure to find a reputable breeders who checks their dogs for hip and elbow dysplasia. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
