My guinea pig has a crusted head scratch. How do I clean and treat it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Male | 2 months and 4 days old | 0 lbs

My New Guinea pig has a scratch or mark on his head, it wasn’t there the night before so I assume he must have hit himself on something, it’s kind of crusted around the sides of it and he won’t let me move the fur near the area, I don’t think he has muted as I’ve checked his skin and I haven’t seen anything, what should I do? If it’s just a scratch how do I clean it to make sure it won’t become infected?

I would recommend trying some triple antibiotic ointment on the scratch and seeing if that helps. If the scratch does not start resolving in 72 hours you may want to take Jasper in to be checked out I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
