My cockatiel laid many eggs. Was removing them right for her health?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Cockatiel | Female | unspayed

My cockatiel laid a cluth of 8 eggs, I allowed her to sit on it thinking she will get fed up & abandon the eggs, instead to my surprise she laid an 8th egg. As the 8th egg looked very thin, I panicked that she is lacking calcium & might get egg bound if she lays more I removed the entire nest & all the eggs. I am worried, was that the right thing to do ???

Removing the nest and current eggs won't replenish any currently lost calcium, but it may discourage Phoebe from laying more. If she doesn't have a mate, the eggs aren't viable and should be removed anyway. If you suspect she may lay more eggs, adding in a calcium supplement such as oyster shells or a cuttlebone (you can also use cooked eggfood, there are lots of recipes online) can help replenish calcium in addition to feeding her regular diet.
