Why are my puppy's eyes red and swollen, and what should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 27 days old | 3 lbs

The corner outside of my puppy's eye is red and swollen. I don't think it's cherry eye because it looks like it's outside of the eye and I THINK I can see the 3rd eyelid still in tact. Her other eye is starting to become red too.

Hi, and thanks for your question. That is likely to be due to a mild to moderate eyelid inflammation, probably secondary to a trauma or infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well in these cases. Yes it could be or could be due to an infection/inflammation of the third eyelid (even a small foreign body underneath) or eventually a small tumor there. I would strongly recommend a check up at your local veterinarian and appropriate treatment. Antibiotics/antiinflammatory eye drops can be given to decrease the swelling and prevent potential infections.
