My toy poodle yelps in pain when touched. Why isn't she normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 3 months old | 6 lbs

My female toy poodle is yelping out in pain... occasionally even while at rest. I looked her over as gently as I could, when I ran my hand along her ride side she yelped out in pain. She is 3 years old. And is not being her normal self. She will walk around and play a little, but not as active as normal.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly neck or back pain. It could still be pain associated with a leg even if nothing seems wrong with them. I recommend that you have Piper evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Piper feel better. In the meantime, reduce her activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. Good luck and have a good night!
