Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Male | neutered | 8 years and 2 months old | 17.3 lbs
8 yr.old male Chihuahua. Has had cough and gag after drinking water all his life. Vet found no reason. Has intermittent issues with throwing up phlegm. Sometimes refuses to eat. Today he has refused to eat, is licking the floors, drinking lots of water, &throwing up afterwards. He has bright red blood mixed in with black shiny tar looking runny stool. I found a lump at his neck today I haven't noticed before. He is presently asleep. He is obese fat around neck & shoulders.

Poor guy. It sounds as if Joey has a lot of different things going on here and it is difficult to say for sure what the underlying problem is based on his symptoms. However, coughing in pets after drinking water could be due to him drinking the water too fast or he could have an issue with his larynx or trachea. Laryngeal paralysis and tracheal collapse are two things that come to mind as possible causes for this. However, now that he is refusing to eat and has red bloody stool, I suspect he now has an infection. I would highly recommend taking Joey perhaps to another vet for a second opinion. I would definitely start with bloodwork and x-rays of his chest/throat area to gather vital clues as to what his underlying problem is so that we know best on how to treat him moving forward. I hope that your furry friend Joey is able to make a full and speedy recovery soon! Best wishes and take care.
