What are these brown spots on my dog's molars? Cavity or buildup?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 48 lbs

Does this look like the start of a cavity to you? My dog has had daily dental chews, the occasional puppacino, and fruits as treats. She has this brown spot on both her left and right side molars. Just wanna know if this is normal discoloration or if we should get to the vet asap

That appears to be just some build up in a normal furrow in the 4th premolar tooth. This can occur with normal wear on the teeth. You can try brushing your dog’s teeth, at least 3x per week to help prevent any further buildup from occurring. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
