Why is my Brussels Griffon's back skin turning black and spreading?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Brussels Griffon | Female | spayed | 13 years and 11 months old | 13 lbs

My Brussels Griffon's skin on her back is turning black. A vet told us to giver her Melatonon. Her skin just keeps getting further and further down her back. It does not smell, or seem to hurt Lacy. It doesn't seem to cause her any discofort at all. Is this normal for her breed?

Sometimes older pets can experience a darkening if the skin and a thinning hair coat but there is often an underlying cause such as hypothyroidism, Cushings Disease or allergies. I recommend to have her tested for the endocrine diseases as this may yield the answer. An omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs can be beneficial to skin in general but may not correct the underlying cause. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
