My dog has IVDD, is stiff and in pain. How do I care for him at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 3 months old | 20 lbs

we took our dog to the vet today. The vet said he probably has ivdd and sent him home with antiinflammatories and steroids. he didn't give us much more info than that except to monitor him for the next 2-3 days to see if he improves. He's so stiff and looks like he's in pain. I don't even know how to move him. It's very scary.

Poor Chester! Hopefully by tomorrow, you will start to see some improvement. Rest him. Don't move him unless he has to out to potty, and you can bring food and water to him so he doesn't have to move much. Keep a close eye on him, and if you feel you aren't seeing any improvement, bring him back into the vet.
