How can I get my male and female hamsters to live together safely?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 20 days old | 0.099 lbs

I have 2 hamsters, 1 male and 1 female, both are around 4 month old. Last time, I put male into female cage for them to get along, but they fought so I separated them. May you tell me steps by steps for them to get a long in 1 or 2 months?

If your hamsters initially did not get along I probably would not try to put them back together again. Also, if you cage an male and female together they will mate and you may have many liters of babies to take care of. You may be able to get them together on ‘neutral ground’, somewhere outside of either of their cages so they won’t feel territorial of the space. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.

If you put the male in again she will have babies every 4 weeks, There is a possibility that she will not accept the male as a constant companion anymore. You can split the cage in half and put a grid between the male and the female so they can get used to each other again. However there is a chance it may not work and you will have to keep them separate.
